Anyone here a good body-language interpreter?

I'm usually very good at reading peoples body language. (At times I like to observe how people interact.) Today I experienced something that just has me stumped.

For the first time today I talked to a guy in one of my classes. We were chatting waiting for his pizza, standing next to each other but not face-to-face. A girl with a big butt walked in on the line and he was clearly checking her out, no big deal (but this fact might be valuable). I turned straight towards him and we just continued talking like normal, laughing, etc. I wasn't really paying attention while he was maneuvering, but then I realize he's, practically, standing behind me. ???

I just realized that he might have wanted to just keep looking at her without me noticing (i dont know maybe). But that was pretty extreme lol.

My question really is, whats the significance of a person placing themselves behind you mid-conversation? (I'm an analyzer.)Anyone here a good body-language interpreter?
Perhaps he so obviously checked the other girl out as a means of indicating to you that he, while friends with you, is not "interested" in you.

Checking out another girl while speaking to one is an indicator that he considers you a friend, but that is all.

He might have even done so unconsciously.
