I am fifteen, I draw quite well and I am in love with art. I am also in l o v e with tattoos and any kind of piercing as long as the stretching on it isn't too extreme. My mother is aware what I want to be when I reach adulthood, ( a tattoo artist ), but she worries about me not having insurance, or benefits, or not making enough money. Can someone who knows the business help me out? Is there health insurance available for body piercers / tattoo artists? Paid vacations? Do you get paid solely on commission? How much money do you make yearly? I tried looking for these answers online but no one gave clear and specific answers. I'd appreciate if someone answered these. Also, if I want to become a doctor / dentist / something else professional do they allow tattoos? I don't want to eventually get a bunch all over and wind up working at a pizza place. Any answers help, Thank you.Tattoo Artist Career?
Most likely you will be employed as an independent contractor, with no benefits, no rights, no healthcare. I' m certain there must be a license with a requirment for you to be allowed to tattoo and pierce. You would be crazy not to carry a (hefty-priced) liability insurance as well.
If you are successful you may later have your own business and be fully self-employed.
I advise you major in art at college or university, and minor in business. There is plenty of time to explore the other areas and techniques involved in the art training. Any person who plans on being a free-lance artist with their own business should have some training in the nuts and bolts of how to run a business.
best regards.
