Does anyone else feel that A-Rod making what $275 million is a bit on the extreme side?

Ive been a yankee fan forever and i love the pin stripes but i think its a bit ridiculous to pay a single player that much. its not even for what hes done so far for his career, which is pretty damn impressive so far, except for the post seasons, hes getting paid for WHAT HE COULD DO. all these incentives to hit HRs and bat over .300 and break the HR record ( thats questionalable already? ) and it is very saddening as a sports fan to see players getting so worked up about how much they make. seriously, a 5 year old kid plays baseball because he loves the game and might get a soda or a slice of pizza if they win, and professionals are getting paid to play a game. given the opprotunity to play professional baseball, especially for the yankees, let me keep the jersey and we'll call it even.Does anyone else feel that A-Rod making what $275 million is a bit on the extreme side?
Yes, I think it is on the extreme side!!!!!

He is a great player.....But, Jeeez!!
Getting paid $100,000 to play a game is on the extreme side!Does anyone else feel that A-Rod making what $275 million is a bit on the extreme side?
yup.

money is overrated.

the game should be more important than the money.

That's why I'm a minor league fan.

ARod is a jerk, that's why Jeter doesn't like him.
If the Yankees don't shell it out, somebody else will. Yes, it's extreme, but he's one of the best players in baseball, and baseball generates some serious revenues because of players like him. He's a professional, and it's his job. You really can't compare that to a 5 year old learning how to catch.Does anyone else feel that A-Rod making what $275 million is a bit on the extreme side?
Well at the moment it looks outrageous but i think after all is said and done it will be worth it
How is money over rated? that was dumb to say if you could get 275 mill to play baseball you damn sure would
In the economics of baseball, Rodriguez is probably a bargain at that price when you factor in licensing on jersey sales, seat sales, stadium income, etc. that his presence brings.

In the real world, of course, every single player in MLB is grossly overpaid but so are all successful entertainers.
Not at all. Like someone said earlier, the money the Yankees are going to make off of him is going to be lots, lots more. Merchandise, tickets, ads, publicity, and he's going to go down as the greatest baseball player ever if he wins a championship. Will he? I'm not sure.

What's extreme is the Mariners paying Carlos Silva, a mediocre pitcher AT BEST,$50 million over the next four years. That's how we know baseball is coming down.

As for the kid statement, who do these kids aspire to be? A-Rod, Pujols, Santana, etc. And why do they aspire to be like them? Because they are so popular. Why are they so popular? Because they are on TV and their faces and names plastered everywhere. Why are they everywhere? Because they make money.

Even from an early age, our kids are doing things for the opportunity of riches and fame.

Why do you think so many kids want to be ball players, or actors/actresses, or even doctors? It surely isn't because they get to improve the world. It's because they see these professions as popular rich people, and they see that society misconstrues rich and popular with success.

Don't blame A-Rod or the Yankees...blame everyone else.
You presented your question calmly so I will try to tone down my contempt for questions like this. Baseball is a business, A-Rod is argueably the best employee in this business. He is simply negotiating a fair contract for the services he provides. These services help generate BILLIONS of dollars of revenue for the Yankees, the YES Network, and MLB. Regardless of what A-Rod gets paid, there is still going to be billions generated in revenues. Would it make you happier if A-Rod and the rest of the Yankees only got paid $500,000 a year and the Steinbrenners got to keep $1 billion a year? Don't get caught up in the money, it's a business, it's simple economics, supply and demand. There is a great demand for players that can hit 50+HR, 150+RBI, .300+avg and not much supply so the price goes up, big time. Just watch the games and enjoy.
Nah, that's what I make to do my job
In response to the question, it is just monopoly money now. What is upsetting is that these contracts mean that the best players can only ever go to the richest teams in the biggest markets making the teams very top-sided.

should have been a cap a long time ago.
No player in any sport is worth that much and he doesn't hit in October.
I love sports but 275 million is obscene especially when the average American is swimming in credit card debt.
Yes its' crazy and bs he makes that kind of money. The world is going to $h!t and examples like this just make that fact clear.
Paying someone to play a game is extreme!!!

Don't hate the player for taking what's given to him.
yes, it gives him too much extra cash to buy performance enhancement stuff.
I thought I read somewhere once that for A-Rod's last contract (10 years, $250M) he would make something to the tune of $30,000 per at bat. Yes, per at BAT. Add on another $25M to that figure and I would say that's up to about $40,000 per at bat. That is absolutely assinine. Nobody is worth that much money. Ok, maybe that geek that owns Microsoft.
Baseball is a business. Of course that doesnt change the fact that A-Rod wont ever win anything. Besides a lip gloss contest.
Getting paid $275 million is on the ridiculous side. 10 years and $30 million is extreme but that's the nature of the beast.
Your attitude is admirable, but A-Rod is being paid fair market value. Yes, that's difficult to stomach how 275 million (plus incentives) can be fair market value, but he is one of the greatest players of all time, he's extremely marketable (merchandise, tickets, et al), and he's making history while chasing it down at the same time. Yes, Carlos Lee and Prince Fielder may be big names to baseball fans, but EVERYBODY knows A-Rod. Trust me, the Yankees will come out on top with this contract.
yes and I think even he thinks its a bit on the extreme side.
If someone offered you that much would you really say no?

Put yourself in his shoes and it starts to make sense. Besides, he produces. HR and hits = runs and wins, usually. And it = fans in the stands.

If people didn't pay it, players wouldn't get it, supply and demand.

Sorry, but name one commercialized action of prodcut where the owners are not in it to make money. A-rod , or any else, work hard and get paid very well. Does that make him bad? No
No,

If someone was willing to pay me 275 million over the next ten years, I would take it Hands Down!

I don't care what profession either.
So maybe he should play for free? What is the guy supposed to do? If you (or these others calling him greedy) could make 300 mil. Would you turn it down?? NO! What has he done that was greedy??? Not to mention why does anyone besides him or the yankees care what he makes?? How much did Babe Ruth make?? Who cares why does it bother you. Lastly Arod works extremely hard. He playes ever day. Husltles on the field etc.. He also cares what people think of him. Hes not like some of these jerks who don't give a crap about the fans. He has pretty much been a model citizen and he is still getting called greedy and selfish when nobody can ever give me an example of something he has done that is greedy. Everyone says his teamates don't like him. Find me a quote from a teammate of his that didn't like him. I dont care if he gets a billion dollars as long as he hustles and hits homers
