I'm twenty years old and for about a year and a half now I have been getting extremely nauseous, usually for no reason. It all started when I got food-poisoning from a frozen pizza. After that, every month or two out of nowhere I'd just feel extremely nauseated and vomit. Over time, it got more and more frequent to where recently it was a couple times a week I would at least FEEL nauseated (no vomiting most of the time). When I did end up getting sick, I would end up shaking and shivering, and the only way for this to go away was for me to take two Dramamine's and recline on my bed watching TV until I basically passed out from exhaustion. It usually occurs when I'm full, if I'm excited, nervous, stressed, or any other form of extreme emotion. I was taking TUMS for this, but my doctor steered me away from them. He doesn't like me taking Dramamine during my episodes either. He prescribed me Prilosec OTC to take daily, and the episodes are much less frequent; perhaps every couple of weeks now, but they are still occurring.
I spoke with someone on my fathers' side about this since I have lost ten pounds in about two months (I am 5'9" and was at 150lbs, now at 140lbs), and he said that he takes a heartburn pill for acid reflux disease daily, and that upset me. I really don't want to have to live on taking a heartburn pill every day for the rest of my life; it's a hassle. People have told me that it could be an ulcer, but those are usually painful and I very rarely ever feel pain. The doctor tested for H. Pylori but there was nothing.
Is there something else it could possibly be for me to research? I don't know where else to turn and I have an odd feeling that this could be something worse than just acid reflux, since I never feel heartburn. Any help or insight would be wonderful. Why do I have unexplained nausea?
This is tough. I'm honestly not sure what your problem could be. I wonder if you are seeing a gastroenterologist or a regular family medicine doc? If it is just a family medicine doc, it's fine to get a second opinion from a gastroenterologist just to get someone else's take on your situation. A gastroenterologist could do an endoscopy and see if there is something else causing the problem besides acid reflux. I would also ask the gastro to check for other parasites besides h. pylori - there are a few other bad bacteria besides h. pylori that could cause your symptoms. I would request a stool test, not a blood or saliva test, which are usually less accurate.
I will also say that acid reflux can be a pretty intense disorder, so it is possible that you do have that and your symptoms are all related to that. Sometimes you have to play around and try different medications, supplements, and natural remedies. And your doc is right, Tums are probably not the right idea right now.
I really hope you feel better, and I'm sorry I couldn't help more. Why do I have unexplained nausea?
it definitely sounds to me like you could have anxiety. i have generalized anxiety disorder, and i'm constantly dealing with nausea, when i have extreme emotions, like you mentioned, i tend to gag whenever i eat or drink anything. you should talk to your doctor about this possibility. best of luck!
